Namataka and her mom infront of their house in 2002

Namataka Margaret is a perfect example of how Northern Lights Ministries has made a difference. Margaret is the youngest of 7 children who was left in a desperate state when their father and sole provider died suddenly of a heart attack in 1999. We found Margaret at a critical time in her schooling…preschool!  We were able to step in and provide school tuition for her to stay in school. We also help the family with basic needs so that Margaret can go to school ready to learn. Northern Lights Ministries is delighted to see her through her schooling. Had we not met her when we did, it is possible she would be unable to attend school at all because of the need in her family!

Invest in the life of an orphaned/needy child in Uganda by making a long term financial commitment of:

__$45 per month

__$135 quarterly

__$540 per year

This covers their education, basic needs and sometimes health needs. We minister to the orphans and widows by sharing the word of God. When we take care of their needs, we show them the love of Christ. Sometimes it’s through educating the orphans as well as creating income generating projects for widows. Sometimes it’s through emergency food programs or a simple home visit. Northern Lights Ministries seeks to find the best solution for each child on a personal basis.  Children who are without one or both parents are usually dispersed among family members who can manage one more child in the family.

When we find a child who has lost one parent, usually the father, we work to stabilize that child with the living parent.  Often a grandmother or aunt is involved in the care of these disadvantaged children.  However, there are more extreme cases. We have found that some children have lost both parents and have no one to care for them at all. In these instances, NLM problem solves to find a good solution for the child(ren) involved. Because of this flexibility we have a more personal touch with each child and can better find the BEST solution for that disadvantaged child.

The educational system in Uganda is British based. Children begin with 2 or 3 years of nursery school before beginning primary school.  Primary (elementary) runs from Primary 1 through Primary 7. After passing P7 the children move on to secondary school, which runs from Secondary 1-Secondary 6. Children finish at different ages because of the time they may have to be out of school for various reasons.  Most finish S6 between the ages of 18-20.  School fees (tuition) must be paid at most schools.  We have been building relationships with a few schools that we believe to be good schools to send our children to.

NLM monitors the progress, attendance and general well being of each child it sponsors.  Children who represent to us an eager mind and high motivation to be in school will be taken on to secondary school.  Those who are not ready to move on to secondary or who do not have the potential to succeed there will be given other alternatives to secondary school.  These alternatives will include job/life skills training.  We will work with each child to help him reach his potential and to be successful.

There are several costs that must be considered besides those of schooling.  Although  we work to help each family become stabile and self-sufficient, we often have emergencies that require our assistance with food, health matters and transportation.  There are also general costs which we would like to become a regular part of providing for these children.  These needs include clothing, shoes, and furnishings.

Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would come to bring good news to the poor, to bind up the brokenhearted, and to proclaim freedom for the captives.  Matthew tells of the fulfilling of that prophecy when Jesus called the weary and burdened to come to him to find rest.  We as a church body have been called to bring Jesus to these people of Uganda who are so very burdened with the struggles of daily life. God is using us mightily to bring hope and good news to the poor.

Matthew 25:35-36. For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink;      I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.
